Nordic Hackathon in
SAS® Viya® 2019

The Competition

How it Worked

Participant criteria
The Hackathon attracted those who have a talent for analyzing data, a passion and curiosity for discovering answers and a love for predicting outcomes that are hidden in the data. Participants received direct access to the SAS® Viya® in the Azure cloud.

SAS Nordic Partners in association with the Nordic User Group “Fans”, arranged the competition “Smarter Together in Real Life” for our partners for our customers and students. Participants demonstrated the value of analysis, open data combined with SAS and open source. Teams united their different skill sets within their organizations and with customers.

SAS provided the Viya® software in the Azure cloud for easy access. Teams added their creativity, skills and data, and built their showcase based on the following SAS software products: Visual analytics, visual statistics, visual data mining & machine learning, event stream processing, + Esri and open source to build their Smarter Together showcase!

SAS Fans enabled teams before the actual competition started. Through webinars, teams met the experts and explored the product building blocks in the competition.

Partner (team leader) was responsible for all engagement with SAS (single point of contact). Partners were responsible for the use case, data and all team members (including customers and students). Partners engaged potential customers and students. The use case had to be “new for the SAS community” or set a new standard (new ‘code’ algorithms were required).

How we selected the winning team
The winner was selected by an expert panel. All participating teams recorded two showcase videos (3- and 15-minute videos) – like a TED talk and a live demo. Videos were published on the 2019 SAS Hackathon website. The team that demonstrated an in-depth understanding of the power of analytics won. Evaluation criteria: Value (business or common good); the smartness and usability in relation to the new analytical economy; and the implementation of the analytical life cycle in the real world.

The winner presented at the SAS Nordic Forum. The winning team received a trip two passes to SAS® Global Forum 2019 in Dallas in April (including travel and accommodation, flight from the Nordics and 2 separate hotel room accommodation).
