Data & AI in the UK government:

Overcoming barriers and realising potential

As the government’s digital and data roadmap comes to an end in the coming months, Civil Service World’s sister organisation, Total Research have partnered with data and AI leader SAS to take a snapshot of digital transformation in the UK government and compare key findings with our 2022 research.

We surveyed 170 civil servants online across all major government departments. 74% of respondents say that their department now collaborates and shares data with other government organisations. However, only 34% of civil servants report actively collaborates and shares public sector data with the private sector - a missed opportunity.

Despite government’s commitment and strategic intentions, the slow uptake of AI technologies remains a pressing issue, highlighting a broader challenge of turning vision into reality.

This report offers a series of recommendations designed to help government officials unlock new possibilities for greater efficiency, informed decisions, and ultimately, ensure the delivery of better public services to citizens and residents.

  • Applications and Enablers to fully realise the benefits of data sharing.
  • How GenAI is being utilised to enhance public services, streamline operations, and elevate citizen engagement.
  • A five-step guide for public sector organisations to get started with innovation through AI.
