FEATURED TOPIC for Q3/2023
On September 21st, 2023, we will be talking to Professor Helgard Raubenheimer, Director Centre for Business, Mathematics, and Informatics at North West University (NWU) and Marelize Swart from ABSA Corporate and Investment Banking about the topic Talent Connection through industry projects. We will hear from them about how they started a partnership that lasts more than 20 years and how the program has evolved over the years. Helgard and Marelize will share their first-hand experience and answer questions such as:
- how is the curriculum affected by the cooperation with the bank
- how are the students prepared for the projects
- what are lessons learned in early projects
- what are projects’ success rates
- confidentiality in projects
MEET OUR SPEAKERS
Prof. Helgard Raubenheimer
Director Centre for Business, Mathematics and Informatics, North-West University (NWU)
Helgard Raubenheimer is Professor at North-West University (NWU), where he started as a lecturer in 2003 at the Centre for Business Mathematics and Informatics (CBMI). From 2016 he was the Head of the SAS Lab at CBMI, and since 2022 he has been the Director of CBMI. He received a PhD in Risk Analysis from NWU in 2010. Helgard has built up expertise as an educator, researcher, and consultant throughout his career at CBMI. He has completed multiple successful industry-directed research projects and presented professional training in the financial services industry locally and globally. His primary research interest is in quantitative risk management. He co-authored numerous peer-reviewed papers, which have received national and international acclaim from the South African Statistical Association (SASA), the Actuarial Society of South Africa (ASSA) and Risk.net. He became a C-rated National Research Foundation (NRF) researcher in 2020.
Marelize Swart
Head Model Development CIB, Absa Group
Marelize Swart possesses a wealth of experience in model development and has contributed to numerous successful projects across diverse model development teams. Her areas of expertise encompass operational risk, anti-money laundering (AML), and credit risk. At present, she holds a leadership role overseeing the modeling for ABSA Corporate and Investment Banking in South Africa and Africa Regions.
