As an international student, getting a chance at internships is a real challenge for most. Thanks to SAS summer internship program and my SAS skillset I learn from my university courses, I was able to gain a well-rounded experience by interning full time at one of the major financial organisations. Besides learning the technical analytics skills, the internship helped me pick up a lot of soft skills such as teamwork, regular meetings, jargons, presentations and communicating in a work environment. Besides that, I was able to experience and integrate myself with the mindset of Australian Work Culture.

I was fortunate enough to get my work placement opportunity at ME (Members Equity) Bank's Melbourne office through SAS Work Placement program. It was my first experience working at a bank, and it just couldn't have been better. SAS Work Placement team did an amazing job in matching my skill set to the skills required by ME Bank, which made my transition to work all the easier. I was able to utilize all my learning from my Master of Business Analytics course at La Trobe Business School at ME Bank on an everyday basis. The internship helped me immensely to get my hands on with the bank's data warehouse, concepts of which were taught to me in my course. Needless to say, ME Bank's Risk team was really supportive in helping me understand their work and also take my inputs in aligning possible analytics to make the insights all the more meaningful. The final insights of my work that I presented at the end of my internship, gave me immense confidence and motivation, and helped me understand that data analytics indeed goes a long way in transforming businesses.

Through my previous enjoyable encounter with SAS, I quickly applied through the SAS Placement Program when I started job searching for last summer. The communication process was quick and clear. After a few phone calls, I was able to to sit in front of Dave Houghton, the head of Analytics Transformation in Westpac. After a brief interview, I was able to get my hands on the recent project the SDRE team was working on regarding building repositories through raw data sets after data cleaning and basic summary statistics generation. Apparently, our project could save analysts among numerous departments time and energy conducting these actions before they interpret with these data sets for analytics purposes.

SAS work placement program gave me the opportunity to apply my acquired knowledge to real hands-on work experience and gain industry knowledge by working alongside of experienced professionals. During my work placement, which involved writing SAS codes, working with complex datasets and preparing reports for the stakeholders, I developed deep passion for working in data analytics domain. Moreover, the feedback from the managers and other colleagues helped me to learn about my strengths and weaknesses and put on course for my professional development journey. It was indeed a very rewarding and satisfying experience for me and it helped me to kick start my career into the banking industry.

The SAS work placement program has provided me with the incredible opportunity to work with government department after I finished my graduation. Working as SAS analyst was a great opportunity for not only building my SAS skills but also it helps me to develop my communication skills and technical skills as well. At the department, I got an experience to work with huge datasets which give me an opportunity to find out the insights of metadata sets using SAS Enterprise guide and also realized that how powerful the SAS tool is in data analytics. I enjoyed a lot using my programming and analytical skill during 8 weeks placement program.

The SAS Work Placement program provided me with an opportunity to practise the theory I had learnt in my masters program in a real world environment (using real data and with a real impact). Additionally, as a result of this opportunity, I was able to secure an extended contract. This will greatly contribute to the work experience requirement of the ACS.

SAS Workplace Program has been one of the most valuable experiences for me. Unlike the classroom learning, it allowed me to my first exposure to large datasets. During the three months internship, I have acquired valuable skills such as data preparation, data manipulation and building models. Consequently, I could build and implement my first predictive model. Honestly, I would like to divide my analytics journey into two parts one before SAS Workplace Program, where I had limited analytical skills and knowledge; and another SAS Workplace Program which has polished me to take up any type of analytical task. Also, one of the benefits which I gained from this Program is valuable mentorship from leading analytics professionals at the workplace. The platform provided by this internship is highly valuable as it has increased my confidence, practical knowledge and most importantly the much-required analytical skills. I thank SAS for providing me such a great opportunity which has potentially changed how I do analytics.
