In accordance with worldwide standards and regulatory requirements, the company has implemented sustainability related frameworks, such as Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Lessons Learnt, and Health Safety Environment (HSE). For Descon to evaluate the effectiveness of these frameworks and to continue progress towards its sustainability and operational goals, accurate and transparent reporting was essential.
Since multiple business management and monitoring activities were mostly carried out using semi-automated spreadsheets that required a significant amount of manual effort, human mistakes and delayed reporting were unavoidable. Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Lessons Learnt, and Health Safety Environment (HSE) play crucial roles in the company’s sustainability journey. But without accurate and transparent reporting, it can be difficult to evaluate the effectiveness of these frameworks and ensure that Descon remains on track to meet its sustainability and Operational goals.
The Challenge
To report and monitor data related to vital functions of Company operations, semi-automated spreadsheets were used requiring significant amount of manual efforts This resultedin human mistakes and subsequent problems such as delayed reporting for stakeholders or decreased control efficacy. Due to unavailability of central repository of important data related to Risks, Lessons Learnt, HSE and Actions management, the Company was too constrained to perform detailed analysis for qualified decision making. To deal with these issues, the company needed a new approach. Descon considered several options, including in-house development, ERP customization, and off-the-shelf software. However, opting for off-the-shelf solutions poses major challenges for organizations like Descon, which have developed their business procedures over decades of operation. Unfortunately, these solutions rarely cover the whole range of problems, even when they do a good job of addressing a specific issue. Therefore, Descon had to explore options that offer foundational tools, empowering them to create tailored solutions that are closely aligned with their unique needs.

The Solution

This involved definition of various business specific workflows, on page calculations, notifications, reports and dashboards. SAS GCM enabled them to define relationships between various functions (modules) in SAS GCM to provide a 360 degree enterprise view. While the majority of problems were resolved during the initial phase of the solution's deployment, the flexibility of the SAS platform allows Descon to further improve the solution in response to evolving business dynamics.
